That’s why if there’s an issue with the tires, they’ll need to be fixed right away. One issue that could arise is tire cupping. Below, we’ll tell you what causes tire cupping and how to get them fixed. Then, you can always contact Pat Peck Nissan for service on your tires.
How Tire Cupping Forms
Cupped tires are usually formed from loose, worn, or bent shocks or suspension parts. These components can then cause a tire to bounce as it moves, coming down harder on some spots than others.
Other parts that may contribute to tire cupping are:
- Ball joints
- Wheel bearings
Basically, any part that connects the wheel to the rest of the car can lead to this happening to your tires.
What Tire Cupping Looks, Sounds & Feels Like
A cupped tire usually appears in a scalloped treadwear pattern. It looks like 3- to 4-inch patches were scooped out across, in the middle, or on the edge of the tire. You may also have a diagonal swipe, where the cupping is shown in a diagonal pattern.
You may hear a rumbling noise when driving at higher speeds. You could also feel vibrations in the steering wheel or chassis feedback through the seat. Either way, you’ll want to get the tires looked at as soon as possible, as they could be too unsafe to travel on.
How to Identify & Fix Cupped Tires
You may be wondering how to determine if you have cupped tires, especially when driving. There are several ways you can identify this issue, such as:
- Noticing any vibrations, especially when you hit a road obstacle.
- Pressing the hood of the vehicle down and looking for any bouncing motions. If it continues to bounce after you stop applying pressure, then suspension parts or struts could be loose or worn.
- Inspecting the tires by running your hand across the tread. If you feel a wavy surface, then it’s most likely from tire cupping.
If you spot one of the above identifiers, then you’ll want to bring your vehicle to our service center right away. If any suspension parts need to be repaired or replaced, we’ll do so in a timely manner. We may also have to replace the tires, but we’ll give you brand-new, high-quality ones that are designed for your specific automobile.
If you don’t need new tires, then we’ll rotate and rebalance your existing ones. This will be done to help avoid uneven patterns in the future, as well as get the weight distribution in the tire right.
